About Us
The International Primatological Society is delighted to announce that the IPS 2008 Congress will be held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), located in the heart of Scotland’s capital city within walking distance of a range of hotels to suit all budgets. The airport is conveniently just 10km away. More than 150 daily flights connect Edinburgh with many airports across the UK, Europe and the US.
The Primate Society of Great Britain will host the Congress which has not been held in the UK since the 1976 meeting in Cambridge and as PSGB is the largest primatological society outside the USA we felt it was time for us to host it again. PSGB’s national conferences have demonstrated, for many years, that we have a vibrant and dynamic community of primate researchers in the UK and we expect that to be evident in the quality and breadth of the 2008 Congress. The Congress will maintain IPS’s tradition of welcoming primatologists from all disciplines from all over the world to present the best of contemporary research.
The proposed social programme will include a Ceilidh (Scottish country dancing), a final conference dinner, poster receptions at the EICC and opportunities to visit Edinburgh Zoo and view some of the primate material in the National Museums of Scotland.
A number of sponsorship and exhibition packages will also be available. Please contact the Congress Secretariat at the address belowfor further details.
We hope you will join us in Edinburgh in 2008. (Register your interest in the congress).

Congress Committees
An exceptionally able Executive Committee has been assembled from among the membership of PSGB. This committee, initially of five, will direct the organisation of the Congress. A company, IPS 2008 Ltd., has been established as the financial vehicle for the Congress and will provide transparency for IPS and its members.
Two sub-committees (Local Arrangements & Social Committee, Scientific Committee) have been established and are being directed by members of the Executive Committee.
For further details about committee composition and activities visit the Congress Committees webpage.
IPS 2008 Logo
The logo of the Congress is composed of a number of elements which may be used separately or in combination:
- An image of a Douc monkey (Pygathrix nemaeus) with an adult and two infant cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus)
- A border of representative primates illustrated in a Celtic style
- Congress lettering in CelticHand font
These images were created by Stephen Nash (Scientific Illustrator, Conservation International/State University of New York) and the organisers are indebted to him for his inspiration and generosity. The copyright of these images is retained by Stephen Nash and they may not be reproduced without his written permission.
IPS 2008 Website
The site has been designed by Paul Honess based on a concept by Stephen Nash, who also supplied a number of images for incorporating into the design. The site is currently under construction so we ask visitors to bear with us until more detail is available to allow its completion.
The site is being constructed using Macromedia Dreamweaver v8 and checked for browser support with Mozilla 1.6 and IExplorer 7.0. Some functions such as drop down menus incorporated in this site are not supported by some earlier versions (e.g. Netscape Communicator 4.07). It is best viewed under 1024 x 786 resolution.
Congress Venue - The Edinburgh International Conference Centre
During the preparation of the bid to hold IPS 2008 in the UK the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) was identified as an ideal venue for this congress. It provides a single site with a degree of flexibility of space-use that is ideal for IPS 2008. Please visit the EICC website to see the venue in which we will be meeting; you will even be able to take a virtual tour.
Edinburgh Convention Bureau
The Edinburgh Convention Bureau (ECB) work hard to market Edinburgh as a destination for a range of national and international events and are very successful at doing so. The Executive Committee are extremely grateful to the ECB for their past and continuing support for our congress. Specifically, we would like to acknowledge the financial support given to us by ECB together with Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian.
Professional Conference Organiser
Although the Executive Committee and its sub-committees will take on much of the work in organising this congress, IPS 2008 is making use of a Professional Conference Organiser (PCO) to help coordinate this event. Among many benefits the appointment of Meeting Makers Ltd not only represents value for money in accumulated experience organising major international events but also adds considerable skills valuable when negotiating with local suppliers to the congress.
